BEING THE ONLY CHRISTIAN IN THE FAMILY
I didn’t know there was much difference between being called
a Christian and living the life of a Christian until I started living the
Christian life. My family is your typical Christian family (i.e. when asked,
your religion is? You say, “Christianity”) by title and not by life style.
When I finally got to know Christ, I wanted it to be a
secret. I tried keeping it a secret; didn’t know the changes were very obvious
until mom said, “You are changing. It is good to have a real Christian in the
house”. I was happy but my smile was cut short when majority of the
conversations/activities at home would cause me to err if I indulge in them.
Even when I tried to stay clear, it sought me out. Keeping silent became the
next form of approach until my opinion was sought after. My answers usually
result to harsh words like – “what do you know about life!” Or “you are just starting.
You will soon get tired”.
The fact that I was the only one in the house that actually
believes in God became glaring when challenges knocked on the door. My Bible
assured me that God is with me even in the storm; that I should fear not. But
my parents can’t stop complaining and questioning God, pointing fingers at one
another for not doing this or that. I often wonder why they can’t see what I’m
seeing or hear what I’m hearing. God’s word echoed in my ear whenever my ears
gave attention to their complaints.
In all . . . I finally understood what Jesus meant when He said
we must deny our family and follow Him. It doesn’t matter if your parents,
spouse, friends, brothers or sisters have given their life to Christ; their
beliefs doesn’t affect yours – it is your choice to follow Christ. And if you
deny Him today, He will deny you in front of His Father in heaven.
