WHAT STANDS AGAINST YOU AND YOUR FAITH
“David said to the Philistine, ‘You come against me with
sword and spear, but I come against you with the name of the LORD Almighty. The
God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will hand
you over to me, and I will strike you down and cut off your head…’” (I Sam.
17:45-46).
When David came face to face with Goliath, there were a lot
of things going on in the background which we sometimes fail to mention; like
the attributes of Goliath and the lack of confidence his own people had in him.
The Might of Your Giant
Goliath was the champion of the Philistine army. His
physique alone drives fear into the hearts of men. He was a highly trained
soldier that has gone to many battles whereas David was only a little boy with
no military training. Goliath was also well equipped for battle with a spear, a
sword and a shield, and David only had a swing with him. At the end of the day
David came out victorious.
Sometimes the nature of the giant/challenge/obstacle/storm that we
face might make us to doubt ourselves, even doubt God’s word and sovereignty –
maybe not in this situation, maybe I need to try something else first.
The fear of Goliath made the men of Israel to run; the fear
of the giant leads to our defeat and not the giant itself. What is your giant? What
weapon are you using to face your giant? David’s weapon was the words that came
out of his mouth and the belief in his heart – He confessed victory and victory
was his.
The Trust of Those Closest To You
It is comforting when your family and friends believe in you,
even when the task ahead might be impossible. The assurance that they have your
back and are cheering for you to succeed can uplift you to do greater things,
but when it’s the opposite… the little confidence that you might have will
diminish with every word they say.
David had his oldest brother doubt him, the men in the camp
of Israel and even the king of Israel, King Saul… they all had their fair share
of doubt, but David knew what he had – the God that delivered him out of the
paw of the lion and the paw of the bear. The same God will deliver him out of
the hand of the Philistines. (I Sam. 17:26-37)
It takes faith to achieve victory. Anyone can shout after a
miracle has happened but it takes faith to shout before the miracle happens.
